Often you hear the question asked as to what makes people successful in our industry. I believe that the clues are all around us and that there is no secret to success. Many times from the stage at company events we hear people use the word ‘decide’ – “I decided that I was going to focus on getting to Manager”, “I decided that I needed to do more activity”.
The word ‘decide’ is one of the clues to a successful life. When you decide to do something, it normally means that you are implementing some change. So many people are too busy living their lives to decide to change, or rather, that’s the excuse they use. Even when people are not satisfied with where they are in life, they still make the excuse that they are too busy to do the things they need to do to make the change.
Change is something that we can all feel uncomfortable with occasionally but it is a necessary part of growing, so we all need to embrace it. Unless we are all continually making small changes to the way we do things or to the way we think, then we will stop growing and will never reach our absolute potential.
The decision to change starts with building our desire, painting a colourful vivid picture of where we want to go and who we want to be. Keeping focussed on our goals will help us to have the courage to face change. Next comes dedication – becoming dedicated to learning what we need to know. Learning about ourselves, about our company and its products, about its Marketing Plan, and about the potential that it offers.
Any great achievement requires dedication – you can’t play at being a success. I would say that the dedication to becoming the best we can personally be is the most Important requirement. It’s sometimes hard to recognise that we may need to make changes to our behaviours and our habits.
Next comes determination because there will always be challenges along the way – that too is part of life and part of growing. As you are learning your trade, recognise that things will not always go as smoothly or as quickly as you may have wanted. Learning about ourselves, about our company and its products, and its Marketing Plan
One of my observations from having been Involved with sport for many years is that it was not always the most talented player that made the top of their profession – determination played a key part. The great golfer Arnold Palmer said “The more I practice the luckier I get.”
Persistence and determination are key. Someone once said that it is not the number of times that you might get knocked down in life, more important is that you pick yourself up every time and continue on your journey of growth.
How can you achieve all these things? Again, the clues are all around us. Leaders are readers, surround yourself with material that will help you build – books, tapes, CD’s etc. Surround yourself with people who are committed to seeing you succeed. This is why you will always find the leaders attending all the meetings and trainings that they possibly can. They know that they can still learn from every event, that they can be inspired by others around them, and equally they can share their motivation with others.
So, no secrets, just simple steps performed diligently on a daily basis until they become a way of life. Is it worth it? Without question it is, you only have one life, live it to the full and become committed to your journey of continual development.
